| In
the academic field of translation, there has been a recent shift
from certificate programs to undergraduate minors. The definite
reason is unclear, although perhaps it is because minors have a
clear distinction in the academic world, and certificates can be
sometimes ambiguously defined.
• University
of Texas at Brownsville
UTB, along with Texas Southernmost College, once offered 2 separate
certificates in translation and translation with bilingual administration,
as is visible on the current website. Recently, both certificates
were combined into one minor with most of the same requirements.
Although current information is available through the University,
a translation major should be offered there within one year.
• University
of Texas at El Paso
An undergraduate minor is offered in Spanish/English Translation.
Besides training in translation, the minor also offers experience
with simultaneous and consecutive interpreting. Certification,
though not directly part of the program, is available by passing
an exam that is offered 5 times per year, and can be taken by
any UTEP undergraduate or graduate student who has completed 2
of the translation courses.
